Fons Català de Cooperació
al Desenvolupament
The Catalan Fund of Cooperation for Development is
a non-profit association born in July 1986, with the intention of
being an organization where all public institutions (town councils,
county councils, province councils and autonomous government) could
gather, in order to contribute, from the Catalan scope, to the development
of the most impoverished countries in the planet, as well as to
stimulate the citizens' participation through informative campaigns.
At present the Fund has 289 members,
out of which 259 are town councils concentrating 85% of the Catalan
population.
Its priorities have been delimited in two frameworks:
a) Theme framework:
aimed at encouraging municipalism and local development, migration
and development programme, promotion of human and peoples rights,
as well as human and sustainable development.
b) Geographical framework: divided in five areas, aimed principally
at Latin America (with special interest in Central America and the
Caribbean), the Mediterranean, and sub-Saharan Africa, and, to a
lesser extent, initiatives in Europe (only in postwar emergency
situations), and Asia.
Strategical lines of work have also been established in order to
encourage decentralized cooperation for development and integral
promotion of people and communities of Southern countries, as well
as to sensitize the population of the North by fostering the understanding
of other societies and cultures
.
Both the bodies grouping the Catalan town councils, the Catalan
Association of Municipalities and Counties, and the Federation of
Municipalities of Catalonia, are organizations collaborating with
the Fund, which urge their members to associate to the Catalan Fund.
The Fund counts on the Generalitat of Catalonia (Autonomous Government)
as a protective body, and it has been a member of the Cooperation
Council of the Generalitat since its constitution in 1995. Likewise,
as a result of the approval of the Catalan Law of Cooperation for
Development (Law 26/2001, of 31st December), the Catalan Fund is
a member of the Committee Coordinating with Local Bodies.
